For the patriotic festivities, Melania donned a white sleeveless midi-dress decorated with a ‘Dancing Girls’ print from Alexander McQueen. From the designer Spring 2020 Ready-To-Wear Collection, the Dancing Girls Asymmetric Midi Dress is a silk blend that features a round bateau neck, a sleeveless flowy flared style design, fitted bodice, an asymmetric draped skirt, and a black Dancing Girl print all-over.

What makes this eye-catching specific dress one of a kind is the “dancing girls” sketched all-over and the story behind it. In a show of community spirit, lucky design students Central Saint Martins fashion students were enlisted collectively to help to contribute in the making. According to PAPER, who got a behind-the-scenes details of the “Dancing Girls” dress, spoke with Alexander McQueen Creative Director Sarah Burton about her Spring 2020 collection. The abstract line motifs of “dancing girls” were drawn by lucky design students on long white sheets during a life-drawing class led by Fashion Illustrator Julie Verhoeven at the brand’s flagship store in London.

From there, the entire McQueen staff then hand-embroidered and stitched the sketches over a single ivory linen dress. The Stitch School, a group that fosters community through needlework, provided the teams in London and Paris with specialist tables and looms so that every single person could contribute to the making of this look. According to Burton, the collaboration between the school kids and her entire staff working together to bring the dancing girls’ dress to life amounted “to the sense of community spirit and togetherness” for this one-of-a-kind piece.

“I love the idea of people having the time to make things together, the time to meet and talk together, the time to reconnect to the world,” Burton wrote on her Spring 2020 show notes.
