During his 90-minute address to Congress, President Trump highlighted his administration’s economic, national security and immigration policies and positioning himself as a champion of the American worker and American families. Toward the middle of his address the president recognized conservative radio host, Rush Limbaugh, who recently announced he is battling stage 4 lung cancer. He called on Melania to present Rush the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors.

“Rush Limbaugh, thank you for your decades of tireless devotion to our country,” Trump said. “Rush, in recognition of all that you have done for our nation, the millions of people a day that you speak to and inspire, and all of the incredible work that you have done for charity, I am proud to announce tonight that you will be receiving our country’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

The move was met with a standing ovation and cheers from Republicans as Democrats remained seated. As Melania fastened the medal’s blue ribbon around Rush’s neck, someone on the House floor shouted, “Thank you, Rush.”

The president also touted Melania’s ‘Be Best’ initiative, the first time he ever mentioned it during a State of the Union address. The initiative was launched in 2018 as the First Lady campaign to focus on issues of American children, including well-being, social media use and opioid abuse.

“Every young person should have a safe and secure environment in which to learn and to grow. For this reason, our magnificent first lady has launched the Be Best initiative to advance a safe, healthy, supportive and drug-free life for the next generation online, in school and in our communities,” Trump said. “Thank you, Melania, for your extraordinary love and profound care for America’s children. Thank you very much.”

Other Trump women also attended the SOTU address, including his daughters Ivanka and Tiffany, as well as his son Eric’s wife, Lara. All the ladies looked elegant with Ivanka wearing a black sleeveless midi dress embellished with gold buttons and a striking red collar from Givenchy. Tiffany donned a lilac two-piece with a belt at the waist while Lara opted for a camel-colored pants suit from Zara.

Democratic female lawmakers also made a political fashion statement, by repeating what they did in last year in wearing an all-white ensemble. Dozens of women House Democrats led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi dressed in white as a symbol of solidarity to commemorate the 100th anniversary of women first having the right to vote.
