What Melania Wore Having Dinner With Japan Emperor

Bedazzled in chiffon!

Following a full day of cultural events, First Lady Melania Trump alongside President Trump dined with the Japanese emperor and empress at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo Monday evening.

For the special occasion, Melania donned a beautiful pale pink chiffon gown by J. Mendel. The caftan floor-length dress included embroidered feathers throughout with an embellished neckline. It also featured a cape like-sleeves and a slit on the side of the skirt. This beautiful silk maxi gown retailed for $4,490 on Moda Operandi, but it is currently sold out.

For footwear, Melania paired the J. Mendel gown with silver Christian Louboutin pumps. The silver Pigalle Follie retails for $745 at Barneys.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako greeted both Melania and President Trump outside of the palace entrance before the state banquet. The Trumps made history being the first foreign guests of Empress Masako. He ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1, following his father’s early abdication —  the first abdication in two centuries.

“We are profoundly honored to return to Japan as your nation’s first state guests following the enthronement of his majesty the emperor,” Trump said during the dinner. “We thank the people of Japan for their incredible hospitality and warm welcome in this majestic land.”

Empress Masako donned a floor-length cream gown with a matching lace blazer of sheer sleeves. As for the men, President Trump and the emperor both had on tuxedos for the black-tie dinner at the palace.

The couples and U.S. and Japanese officials enjoyed a six-course meal of consommé a la royale and turbot a la meunière sauce tomate, followed by cote de boeuf rotie, salade de saison, glace mont fuji, and a sixth course of melon and grapes.

While Melania’s J. Mendel dress is currently sold out, below are affordable alternative gowns to buy for a special dinner or wedding..
