President Trump tweeted Monday night that he will sign an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration to the United States, as the nation battles the health and economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Citing “the attack from the Invisible Enemy” of the coronavirus, Trump said he would carry out the directive by an an executive order to “ protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens.”

“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens,” Trump tweeted. “I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!”

The temporarily suspension of all immigration would be part of an extension on the travel restrictions the Trump administration has already imposed in February on most of nations considered a hotspots, including most of European nations and China to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Title 42 of the U.S. Code enables a president the power prohibit immigration for health reasons, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention used this tool last month to close the border with Mexico.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is exercising its authority under Title 42 of the U.S. Code to give Customs and Border Protection the tools it needs to prevent the virus coming through the northern and southern borders,” Trump said at the daily White House briefing March 20. “All of those measures that we are putting in place will protect the health of all three nations and reduce the incentive for a mass global migration that would deplete the health care resources needed for our people.”

A Supreme Court decision in 2018 ruled that President Trump has the authority to ban travelers from certain countries if he thinks it is necessary to protect the United States.

Monday’s tweet news will likely draw legal challenges, and reignite Democrats to harshly criticized the move.
