Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden made a campaign stop in North Carolina on Sunday and was greeted by the Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper where he was caught on a hot mic saying the Democrat Senate candidate Cal Cunningham plagued in a sex scandal as “frustrating,” but the party will still work to “get him across” the finish line.
“Thanks for coming out, you didn’t have to do this,” Biden is heard telling Cooper at the airport tarmac where the Governor met with the presidential nominee prior to the campaign stop.
“No I wanted to, I wanted to express my strong support for you, and I think we’re all going to get across the line,” Cooper responded. “I think Cal’s going to get across the line, too.”
The former vice president appears to have responded to the governor, though it is unclear from the video of what exactly Biden had said.
“I know that’s frustrating, but we’ll get him. We’ll get him across,” Cooper said.
The Senate race has become the political scandal so far in the 2020 cycle when it was revealed earlier this month that Cunningham, a married father of two was caught sexting with a woman who was not his combat veteran’s wife. — including which he referred to the woman as “historically sexy.”
The woman was identified as Arlene Guzman Todd, a media director of a marijuana public relations company. She told AP that both were intimate in Cunningham North Carolina home over the summer.
“I have hurt my family, disappointed my friends, and am deeply sorry. The first step in repairing those relationships is taking complete responsibility, which I do. I ask that my family’s privacy be respected in this personal matter,” Cunningham said in an apology statement on Oct 2.
Prior to the news of the scandal, Cunningham, a star recruit that was posed to stage an upset victory based on the latest polling to unseat Republican Sen. Thom Tillis and help Democrats reclaim the upper chambers. However, his lead has begun to shrink as his unfavorable ratings have risen amid the sexting ongoing revelations.
During his “get out and vote” event in Durham, Biden said it was important for voters to elect Democrats up and down the ballot, mentioning the importance of the North Carolina Senate race without mention Cunningham by name.
North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley on Monday called on Cunningham to “start providing North Carolinians with straight answers on his extramarital affairs or suspend his campaign” after news broke of the name of an unidentified woman’s name appeared to be Cunningham’s second affair.
According to Advertising Analytics, North Carolina’s Senate race has become the most expensive Senate race with more than $242 million spent on ads between both candidates.20202020 Election2020 Presidential RaceCal CunninghamDemocratsGov. Roy CooperJoe BidenNorth CarolinaSen. Thom TillisSenate
