Former first lady Michelle Obama gave the keynote speech on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, but a fashion accessory she wore captured the attention of DNC viewers that instantly went viral on social media as she still spoke Monday evening.
Michelle’s necklace, a simple gold necklace that spelled “V-O-T-E” spread out along the gold chain stood out during her 18-minute remarks. The piece was a custom-commissioned order by ByChari, a Black-owned run by Chari Cuthbert boutique jewelry business based on Los Angeles. The dainty letter chain necklace costs $295. The jewelry company also created Michelle’s large hoop earrings that she also donned during her pre-recorded remarks.
While Michelle gave her speech, DNC viewers took to Twitter frantically looking where they could purchase the bling for themselves. According to Google Trends, “Michelle Obama necklace,” “vote necklace” and “letter necklace” was the top trending search on all of U.S. Google in the last hour” of the DNC event. Footwear News has already called it “the must-have accessory of 2020.”
The company sells the necklace in 14K yellow, 14K rose, and 14K white gold for $295 for small letters and $405 for large letters. In the description, the company noted the necklace was donned by Michelle at the 2020 Democratic National Convention, “encouraging people to do just that: have a say and vote.”
Meredith Koop, Obama’s stylist for the last decade, told CNN Style the necklace was crafted the day after Koop randomly direct-messaged Cuthbert on Instagram in late July.
“I built all of the outfit options I offered to Obama around the necklace. When I commissioned it, I knew it had to be the centerpiece,” Koop said. She admitted she was mildly worried Obama might find the necklace too obvious, but the former first lady liked the idea of the lettering. “When the speech started, you had to squint a little to read it. I love that. It pulled the viewer in.”
Cuthbert told CNN that 12 hours after Obama’s speech on Monday night, orders for the VOTE necklace, were already hit 2,000 mark.
