First lady Melania Trump thanked American students for adapting to the new normal of life in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak and is “proud” of their “determination” in helping to keep the country safe.
“Over the past two months, I know you have had to make many changes in your life,” the first lady said in a two-minute pre-recorded remarks that aired at the end of the CNN Coronavirus Town Hall. “These changes were not easy, but you have been so strong and I am proud of the examples you have become. Your determination to get through these will define your generation for years to come.”
It was Melania’s first solo broadcast address to the nation since the onset of the pandemic. The address was pre-recorded in the White House and the segment aired at the end of CNN’s Coronavirus Town Hall. The network’s weekly town hall on the pandemic debuted in March, is hosted by “AC360” anchor Anderson Cooper and CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
Melania acknowledged the “many changes” students have had to make amid the coronavirus pandemic causing their world to be turned upside down. For many students, not being able to see their friends on a daily basis in school, along with graduation ceremonies, proms, and many other events were unceremoniously canceled. She expressed gratitude to students for their sacrifice and help in keeping “communities and our country” safe during these “unusual times.”
“So, thank you for helping your families, your friends, your communities, and our country to stay healthy and safe during these unusual times,” Melania said. “Thank you for keeping up your studies and learning in new ways. As we navigate the days and weeks ahead, take care of yourself.”
The first lady encouraged students to take care of themselves in the coming weeks and to ”use this time” to read a book, play or learn a sport, help around the house, stay in contact with friends and family and “make sure you are being your best self,” mirroring the language of “Be Best” initiative that focuses on major issues facing children.
“These are important and healthy habits that we can all easily practice and they are a reminder that we will only get through this with patience, compassion, and care,” the first lady concluded. “Tonight, please know, that the President and I are with you during these challenging times and we continue to do everything we can to support you.”
On Tuesday, Melania participated in a scheduled call between President Trump and the nation’s governors discussing the coronavirus response. The First Lady emphasized the need for governors to “make sure that children are not overlooked in this crisis” and asked governors to focus on “mental health and how we can partner with each of your states to support all Americans — especially children” as part of her Be Best Initiative.
Since the pandemic, Melania has appeared in a few public service announcements raising awareness about the coronavirus to help prevent the spread and the importance of wearing a face covering. She also shown appreciation in several videos for first responders and front-line workers.
