Melania Trump Renews Calls For Americans To Wear Face Masks

First Lady Melania Trump renewed the call for Americans to wear a face mask and practice social distancing “in the summer months” to create a “healthier and safer country in the fall” amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Even in the summer months, please remember to wear face coverings & practice social distancing,” the first lady tweeted Tuesday, including a picture from April of herself wearing a mask. “The more precaution we take now can mean a healthier & safer country in the Fall.”

The tweet comes as the majority of states, particularly Florida, Arizona, and California are seeing a spike of reported daily coronavirus cases. As of Tuesday afternoon, the United States has reported 3.3 million confirmed cases, with nearly 136,000 Americans have died from the coronavirus.

On Sunday, the first lady shared a video, where she is seen donning a mask during her unannounced visit last Thursday to The Mary Elizabeth House. During her time at the women’s and children shelter in Washington D.C., Melania spent time engaging with staff members and young mothers about the importance of strengthening families and protecting children and handed out packaged boxed lunches that were prepared by White House chefs along with other items such as Be Best tote bags.

“It was a pleasure to spend time with the staff, mothers & children at The Mary Elizabeth House, a place that helps strengthen families & provides life skills, counseling & educational resources to help vulnerable single women & their children. #BeBest,” Melania tweeted on Sunday.

Melania first encouraged Americans to wear a face mask during a public service announcement in early April to demonstrate the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) new guidelines. The First Lady was one of the first members of the White House to advocate wearing a mask to curb the spread of the coronavirus after the CDC adjusted its guidance for Americans to wear non-medical cloth coverings when in public as means to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

“As the CDC continues to study the spread of the COVID-19, they recommend people wear cloth face coverings in public settings where social distancing measures can be difficult to maintain such as grocery stores and pharmacies. Remember, this does not replace the importance of social distancing. It is another recommended guideline to keep us all safe,” Melania said in April in a tweet video posted to Twitter.

The CDC since adjusting its guidelines has cited the use of masks as one of the most effective ways to help curb the spread of the virus, especially among asymptomatic individuals. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are urging Americans to wear a mask when unable to maintain social distancing guidelines with 21 states requiring the use of masks in public.
