White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Thursday denounced the violence that erupted from the group of violent supporters of President Trump who stormed the Capitol on Wednesday.
“The violence we saw yesterday at our nation’s Capitol was appalling, reprehensible, and antithetical to the American way,” McEnany said in a televised two-minute statement late Thursday afternoon. “We condemn it — the President and this administration — in the strongest possible terms.”
“What we saw yesterday was a group of violent rioters undermining the legitimate First Amendment rights of the many thousands who came to peacefully have their voices heard in our nation’s capital. Those who violently besieged our Capitol are the opposite of everything this administration stands for,” McEnany added.
McEnany noted that people “working in this building” are working to ensure a peaceful transfer of power and called on all Americans “to come together” to prepare for President-elect Joe Biden to be sworn in on Jan. 20.
“Those who are working in this building are working to ensure an orderly transition of power,” McEnany said. “Now it is time for America to unite to come together to reject the violence that we have seen.”
The brief remarks from McEnany comes as a growing number of Democrat lawmakers call for Trump to be removed from office for his role, blaming the president for the whole incident that ensued in the Capitol on Wednesday. Some are calling for the invoking of Section 4 of the 25th Amendment — the forceful removal of Trump from power by his own Cabinet.
The joint session of Congress was seen to be a long day of debates in delaying Biden electoral college victory as Republicans raised the issue of voter irregularities during the objections of certain battleground election results. However, the proceedings were abruptly halted just one hour into the objection of Arizona when the mob breaching the U.S. Capitol building, forcing members of Congress into hiding for their own safety.
