Cindy McCain Endorses Joe Biden

Cindy McCain, the wife of the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) formally endorsed Joe Biden for president Tuesday evening, tweeting the Democratic presidential nominee is the only candidate who “stands up for our values as a nation.”

“My husband John lived by a code: country first. We are Republicans, yes, but Americans foremost. There’s only one candidate in this race who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is @JoeBiden,” Cindy McCain tweeted in a three-part tweet.

“Joe and I don’t always agree on the issues, and I know he and John certainly had some passionate arguments, but he is a good and honest man. He will lead us with dignity,” she wrote in another tweet.

She continued: “He will be a commander in chief that the finest fighting force in the history of the world can depend on, because he knows what it is like to send a child off to fight.”

“Cindy — I’m deeply honored to have your support and your friendship,” Biden responded in a tweet. “This election is bigger than any one political party. It requires all of us to come together as one America to restore the soul of the nation. Together, we’ll get it done.”

Biden announced the endorsement during a virtual fundraiser, saying the reason she is backing him over his rival is due to The Atlantic article that alleges President Trump of denigrated fallen service members.

“Maybe I shouldn’t say it, but I’m about to go on one of these Zooms with John McCain’s wife, who is, first time ever, is endorsing me because of what he talks about with my son and John’s who are heroes, who served their country, you know he said they’re losers, they’re suckers,” Biden said during a fundraiser Tuesday, according to a pool report of his comments.

The Atlantic first reported earlier this month that Trump privately belittled service members who died in World War I as “losers” and “suckers. Trump and several current and former White House officials have forcefully denied the account.

Cindy McCain during the second night of the Democratic National Convention last month shared a video of the two decades of friendship her husband and Biden had maintained in Washington. The video, overlaid with photos and footage of the two men was to tout the former Vice President’s ability to work across the aisle. However, it stopped short of an endorsement of Biden.

The endorsement form Cindy McCain joins the crowd of over 100 former Sen. McCain Senate and campaign staffers in endorsing Biden last month, despite working against him in 2018 to beat him when he was the vice-presidential nominee in 2008.

“Given the incumbent president’s lack of competent leadership, his efforts to aggravate rather than bridge divisions among Americans, and his failure to uphold American values,” they wrote in their endorsement, “we believe the election of former Vice President Biden is clearly in the national interest.”
